I never saw...

Let’s raise a candle for Gelett Burgess, born January 30, 1866, a master of nonsense verse and inventor of silly characters called the Goops.

The Goops they lick their fingers,

And the Goops they lick their knives...

...but whose greatest claim to fame might be this nonsense verse, at which I asked my favorite artists under 8 to give their interpretation.

I never saw a purple cow,

Who says?

Who says?

Davis at work. Now, I ask you, could YOU draw a purple cow from memory?

I hope to never see one.

But I can tell you this, right now…

But I can tell you this, right now…

I’d rather see than BE one.

Cam agreed: instead of a purple cow he started with, he decided to go with flying Purple People Eater. Sounds good to me.

Gelett learned to hate his own poem, enough that he wrote a sequel.

Ah, yes, I Wrote the “Purple Cow” -

I’m Sorry, now, I wrote it!

But I can tell you Anyhow,

I’ll Kill you if you Quote it.
